12:17 pm
>> commissioner moore. >> aye. >> commissioner wu. >> >> commissioner sugaya. >> aye. >> commission president fong. >> aye. >> that passes unanimously and puts you on item five comments. >> commissioner moore. >> there is an article in two different papers talks about fresh and easy grocery stores closing and i am greatly concerned that we finally found a grocery store charn which were moving into areas it had been difficult for many years, and so what is it the city can, would do in order to -- for that not to happen? >> planning. >> there is obviously a large silence here. plaps the director --
12:18 pm
>> it's a private corporate decision to stay open or not. the question i think that is appropriate for the city and the successor agency depending on the location whether other stores can fill those spaces? and one of the things -- just to back up i had the same concern. those stores represent an opportunity and what we were calling food deserts in the city for a long time so i was going to talk to the office of economic development to work with if not them with potentially other stores to take those spaces and if fresh and easy wanted to lease them to other operator versus just walking away. >> one thing i observed and we talked about retail, large grocery stores that my observation was fresh and easy in a city other than san

francisco in other food starved neighborhoods, food store starved neighborhoods i saw a certain lack of relevance for the type of foods the store chain offered relative to ethnic tastes and needs and i'm not sure that applies here, but the store wasn't quite in line with what people needed. i will say it and i say it then and i will say it now and if indeed the small business commission is weighing in that might be one element to consider. >> commissioner antonini. >> yeah, i agree. i've seen this in the past with situations where we -- after the loss or closure of that shop in stonestown and there were efforts to find grocers to go in there and eventually got a traders joes there and i think it's important to go to some of
12:20 pm
the other grocers in particular and see if they're interested in occupying those spaces if it does happen. it's just an initial report. a couple other items meetings i havepate participated in and i have been meeting on vincinte, the tenants and the property owner and the business owner for the property on vicente and i think those talks are going very well working out things and finally on today's calendar i had meetings which will be mentioned later with the project sponsor and dr requesters in regards to the project on toledo which is at the end of the calendar today and i think things are going very well with that. finally just recognizing some

excellence from some of our local football teams. the city college rams in the championship game again this year and we don't know city college or people don't realize they have one of the best programs in the nation and particularly when we have issues that come up regarding city college we have to make sure we mention the things that are being done right and encourage them and kudos to the lincoln mustangs who won the triple a and the wildcats who had a win last saturday night in san jose which i was at and it was the first time they have been ranked in the top teams in the state in many years since the glory days in the 60's and play for the championship in friday night and if successful move to the state championship game so hats off
12:22 pm
to the players as those various institutions. >> thank you. commissioner borden. >> yeah, there was interesting article from a publication called "drink magazine" and dual income no kids. >> >> and san francisco ranked first for that situation and i thought it was interesting there was correlation between the score and the amenities and those treaktdives to couples without kids and talks about their preferences and housing typing. s and i think it would be interesting to look at that and when we look at units that we need to accommodate san francisco it would be often to understand that data and we talk about we want developed and i don't know if we always have incentives for that. >> commissioner moore. >>i want to make a procedural

comment and ask the secretary to weigh in. we are seeing increased amount of email to our seven commissioner email boxes with no cc to the commission secretary or anybody on staff. that creates a shortcut of recording comments made as they do not become part of the public record which they need to. in addition to the fact they're addressed to us individually each of us respond to all we are creating -- once forward not allowed internal conversation rather than having the commission secretary and appropriate staff being the in factor of these emails. >> >> so i like to ask the public to please not send in numerous emails to us personally but send to the commission secretary and to staff, staff planner, and on top of that send them in the
12:24 pm
time frame that is more appropriate to how we work. yesterday i got an email of 46 page attachment and no way i will copy that and two, that it can be read and worked on in a timely manner. today i got an email by 1125 and that doesn't work. by that time i'm coming to city hall to sit here, so if you want recognition of your participation please send them to the people that need to have them. thank you. >> commissioner antonini. >> from my point of view i kind of say the opposite and agree with commissioner moore they should also be cc'd to staff but i don't believe i have an email address at planning department anymore so if you want to get a hold of me and send to my private email or call me at my
12:25 pm
dental office or cell phone and most of you have it and certainly i try to make it as public as possible and particularly when they're sent my mail to the planning department we don't receive them for a couple of weeks and in my case i encourage you to call me or email me and get a hold of me with important issues. commissioner antonini none of the seven commissioners sitting here has department email. the email that is the department uses is the same the public uses. it's important that the department is copied and handled and he was good and five minutes later the stuff comes and it's handled in basically the rules prescribe it. >> i agree with that. that's fine. >> thanks commissioner moore. i do concur with those statements. it's extremely to keep up with
12:26 pm
the volume of emails that this commission receives and i appreciate the forwards when you notice that the entire commission or myself or not staff are not cc'd. for the benefit of the public it's the best way to get the comments in is email to the commissions with plurace dot secretary sf .org. i receive those and can send to the commissioners and put in the folder for the public record, and as stated when -- for example today we got flooded with a bunch of emails in the 11th hour and it's very difficult to process at that time the day of the hearing. >> thank you. commissioner sugaya. >> did we ever have the option of having a city email box? >> i don't think it would be too difficult to set up for you. >> but in the beginning we were never -- >> yeah, we had the phone
12:27 pm
numbers but i don't think email was ever offered up. >> we could certainly establish one. could think about that because it's cluttering my other -- >> the issue again is everybody has your other email. >> it will just get forwarded. that's all. >> commissioner borden. >> not to get you off topic but i created a separate account that my commission stuff comes to and i have four email addresses and that way i don't have -- just a thought. >> next item. >> okay commissioners. that will place us under item six which is consideration of adoption of your 2013 planning commission hearing schedule. you have received a draft schedule in your packets last
12:28 pm
week to consider, but i would like to also bring to your attention some holidays that are not noted for your consideration. in february chinese new years is on february 10 which is a sunday. shouldn't impact your hearing schedule but something to consider. in september yom kippur occurs on september 14 which is a saturday. probably doesn't conflict with your calendar but rasiah shana follows -- september 4 through the six and you have a hearing on september 5, and chanukkah is on december 5 and which is a thursday and conflicts on your hearing for december 5. other than that as you normally do we've canceled the thursday july 4 hearing for 4th of july holiday and all of the fifth
12:29 pm
thursdays of the month which include january 31, may 30, and october 31. there's the summer hiatus in august for the last two weeks in august which include august 22 and 29, and then november 28 for thanksgiving, december 26 for christmas and january second for new years. >> any discussion on that? commissioner moore. >> i see quite a few months where we only have three meetings when the fifth thursday would at least give us four meetings because there is a holiday. i am all prepared to recognize additional holidays which are on the day
